Globalization: An Inquiry through Photography

Guest Presenter

Dr. Ron Windrim,

Ron has extensive experience as a Social Studies teacher, curriculum designer, university instructor and professional development consultant. Ron's engaging style along with his focus on Global Studies and his passion for technology guarantee an unrivaled Professional Learning experience. Most importantly, Ron’s understanding of the day-to-day challenges you face as a classroom teacher results in practical strategies and resources you can implement in your classroom immediately.

Webinar Series

Ron presented "Globalization: An Inquiry Through Photography" as a 3-part Webinar Series. The series ran from 3:45 to 5:00 so teachers could participate without leaving their schools.

Social Studies teachers in Alberta have been facing the challenge of implementing the new curriculum. Working with Ron, participants explored the topic of Globalization and learned the fundamentals of digital photography. Although the digital camera is the tool, the real challenge is teaching students how to make the transition from "taking pictures" to "telling a story" through photography.

The webinar was practical, hands on, and applied directly to the Alberta Program of Studies. As a result of their participation in the IO Professional Learning Series, teachers had access to a complete project, that they copied and modified to meet the unique needs of their students. If you weren't able to join us, Ron's complete project is available in the Commmunity Projects section of IO!

Webinar #1 - Resources

Ron assigned homework after the first Webinar. Here is what he asked participants to do:

  • GIVE IT A TRY! (If you get stuck, your students can give you a hand.)
  • Take a series of 5 photographs that tell a story. (At this point, thinking about the story you want to tell, or point you want to make, is more important than your skill as a photographer!)
  • Make a copy of each picture so you don't change the original file.
  • Using photo editing software, scale each image to reduce the file size.
  • Save the new pictures as jpegs.
  • Insert the images in a Word document (Once again, if necessary - your students can help!)
  • Attach the document to the group discussion in IO. Or, email the document to Ron prior to Thursday's Webinar.

Here are some the resources referenced in our first Webinar:

Photo Editing - Helpful tutorials for beginners

If you are just starting off, there are several videos on uTube that explain the basics of photo editing. Here are a few of them. If these videos are blocked by your school district firewall, it would be worth having a look at home.

IO - Intelligence Online

IO or Intelligence Online is a collaborative curriculum design space for teachers. In conjunction with the Webinar Series, Ron created a project in IO that you can modify and implement in your classroom. In-between Webinar sessions Ron used IO to support participants' work. IO provided everyone with the ability to communicate, ask questions and submit their work for feedback.

As an IO member you have ongoing access to Community Projects that are published by other teachers.

You can modify these projects to meet the needs of your own students, or you can use them as a trusted source of ideas and resources. Of course your IO membership also allows you to participate in other events in the IO - Professional Learning Series.
